After the successful showcase of the special IFF Rotterdam programme ‘Once We Were Birds’ at the Zagreb Film Festival in 2004 that featured some of this special Romani films programme, the two festivals have decided to continue their successful co-operation this year again. This time it is another thematic programme - ‘Red Westerns’ devoted to this specific and special genre, Westerns made in Eastern Europe in its flourishing period (1960-ies and 1970-ies). ‘Red Westerns’ are westerns made during Soviet times; they form the communist answer to the American Western – a ‘decadent’ genre that was perceived as the embodiment of ruthless capitalism. ‘Easterns’ are Westerns made in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and ‘Sauerkraut Westerns’ are Westerns made in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic). Some examples of this genre were brought together under the umbrella of ‘Red Westerns’ programme at IFF Rotterdam 2011 and were received with a great audience success. Zagreb Film Festival is happy to be able to show a part of this programme to its own audiences and share with them films from the history that is not so old, yet forgotten or unknown for many.
PROGRAM IS GOING TO BE SHOWN AT THE ZAGREB DANCE CENTER
